My boyfriends 11 year old son is visiting. I need to know how do I put a block on web sites I don't want him to look at, like pron sites? These sites seem to be his entertainment while we are at work. I really don't want to bust him to dad and I don't think it's my place to say anything to him since I'm kinda the thrid wheel. So should I just put a block on the computer or should I tell dad? Help please.

Discuss this with your boyfriend, and with the kid himself if necessary. You don't need to "bust" the kid; just ask your boyfriend if he's OK with his son's taste in websites. It may be that he's permitted to visit these sites -- in which case, there's no point in blocking anything. If you can't ask your boyfriend about this, then you have bigger problems coming -- remember that *you* are not the third wheel; the kid is, at least in this sense.

Even if your boyfriend is not OK with what his son does, a block will probably not be a great idea. All blocking software blocks "good" sites as well as "bad" ones, and in any case, a knowledgeable user can bypass the blocks -- so you're back to square one. (Besides, looking at porn is not going to do the kid any particular harm.)

My bigger question is this, though: why is an 11-year-old alone in the house while you're at work? That's a little too young to leave alone for extended periods, I think; given that, you and your boyfriend may get better results by being around more for the kid so that he doesn't *have* to go look up porn on the Web.

In other words:
* Technology is not a substitute for parenting.
* You really need to talk about this with your boyfriend before you make any decisions concerning *his* kid.

If you want to be 100% sure, you're out of luck, however, you can try to restrict him from going to certain sites if you are using Internet Explorer.

Open up Internet Explorer
> If you don't see a menu bar, press ALT once (don't hold it down)
> Go to Tools
> Go to Internet Options
> Go to the Content tab
> Find Content Advisor, and click Enable or Settings (Settings only if it says Disable)
> Look through the ratings list and choose how much of it you want to let though with the slider below (They should all be set to None)
> Click OK
> Choose Password and Hint
> Click OK

This should stop most sites.

Go to internet explorer and do the following.

Click on Tools > Internet Options > Content > and under the Content Advisor, click on Enable, and take it from there!
