It's big and getting bigger.

It's old and getting older.

Any more questions?

Until recently, there was never any theory that could fully explain the universe. There were the (minority) supergravity (which believed in 11 dimensions) and (majority) 5 string theories (which all believed in 10 dimensions), but none of those could place exactly when the Big Bang occured and why. Finally the the string theoriests conceded that there is an 11th dimension. Once they realized this, the 5 different string theories turned out to be one and the same. The 11th dimension is a membrane that holds in all the matter of our universe. It is closer to our bodies than our clothes. We figured out that that there are, in fact, parallel universes; tons of them. They are all inside their own membranes (which we think can be flat, cylindric, donut shaped, etc). When they collide, like waves in the ocean, you get a big bang, and a new universe is created. This probably happens all the time. There is probably life in tons of these other universes; just none like us bc the laws of physics would all be different. In fact, that's how M theory led to the conlusion of a parallel universe--we realized that gravity shouldn't be so weak, and that it must be leaking through our membrane from a parallel universe.

We could further investigate this by actually creating a universe in a labratory. This is completely safe and completely easy to do. And it would begin to expand and create its own space too, without ever imposing on the space in our own unvierse.

Pretty cool, huh?

It has no edge, and it has no center. Space is expanding... The farthest galaxies we can observe that appear to be forming today really formed since the big bang, we are looking back in time when we see out there... the first elements were the lighter elements mostly helium and hydrogen. stars are mostly helium and hydrogen, they are hot enough to creat nuclear reaction and form new elements, creating heavier elements... then the next generation of stars take these new elements, grow hotter and form still newer heavier elements... the oldest stars are mostly helium and hydrogen, and the newer stars still have a majority of helium and hydrogen but other elements are in them too... every element has been created in the stars, including the elements to create planets, and the elements to form our bodies... the study of the universe and of the stars is really a study of our origins..

Its a very BIG question.

The universe is probably more than 14 BILLION years old!

Its full MILLIONS of big collections of stars called galaxies.

Most galaxies have MILLIONS of stars each!

Our STAR, the SUN, is only an average size star.

Many other stars have PLANETS, just like our SUN does. So far, astronomers have found more than one hundred planets circling other stars!

Google and wikepedia are both good places to find out more.

First off, remember that scientists will tell you that there is no God who created it. Their story goes like this.....There was a big bang.....(you have to guess where the elements came from to create this big bang). Then, as happens in an explosion, everything goes out....oh wait, the earth came into existence and went into a perfect orbit around the sun to sustain life. Then, all of a sudden, there was this primordial ooze. (Anyone know where the ooze came from?) Then, some microscopic creature from who knows where, decided that they didn't want to be in the ooze anymore, so they grew legs, lungs, and all the other body parts we have today and started populating the earth. However, there is this missing link between apes and man. But I thought if we evolved from apes, there wouldn't be any left....but I digress. Anyway, there you have our universe in a nutshell. This is what is being taught in our public schools....oh that's right, they do mention that it's only a theory once in a while.
But to believe that "God" created our marvelous planet and humans is considered a fairy tale.

It's very old. It's expanding. It's filled with stars and planets and black holes and pulsars... the list goes on and on. Oh and the 'ultimate answer' is 42.
