what is the difference between filing single and head of house hold?

If you've got dependents (according to the IRS definition) then you can file head of household. Basically Head of Household was created because of the sheer number of people who had multiple dependents but were either never married or divorced from their spouses so they couldn't file married filing jointly. This allows them a little more of a deduction than the single person gets.

You have to be unmarried and have dependants in order to file "Head of Household".

Head of household assumes you have a dependent of some kind, spouse or child.
