Start with the least expensive item first.
1) Check your fuel filter. It could be dirty. Replacing it is inexpensive and even if the old one isn't all that dirty, always keep them fresh.
2) Make sure you don't have moisture in your gas tank or fuel. To be on the safe side, pour an additive into the fuel tank and see how that works.
3) Check to make sure the fuel pump is producing enough pressure to get fuel to the engine. If you smell fuel, chances are there could be a leak in the line and it only occurs once in a while. That was the original trouble on my vehicle before it wore out my fuel pump altogether.
4) If the engine turns over the chances of it being an electrical problem is lesser.
If you've been to a car dealership and they can't figure out the problem, I'd say you just learned how incapable they are at helping you with your vehicle and find someone else.

Your answers you got so far sound good. So what i understand from your statement is that when you turn your key, basically the engine won't start. If this is true, then it seems that you may be having problems with your fuel pump. If you turn the key and nothing happens, then it may be your switch what the key fits in or any anti theft device, as suggested in your second answer. Best of luck to you.

Well, if I could see it right when it won't start, I would be able to tell you.
An engine needs fuel air mix, compression, and spark to run. Something is missing when it won't start. Either there is an intermittent spark problem (not likely) or there are times when you aren't getting fuel up to the injectors (more likely). Have you changed the fuel filter lately?

Could be the fuel pump. Sometimes my GMC Sonoma pickup will sputter and sometimes take a couple of turns before the pump reacts and send the fuel to start. Other than that, it could be an electrical problem.

I had what appears to be a similar problem and had my ignition lock switch replaced about 4 times in one year. Have the dealership check that or your anti-theft system. The car might think you are "stealing it". Good luck!

there are two more places to check, the oil pressure switch has a fuel pump cut off if it has 3 wires, this could be a problem
or the fuel pump relay is going bad( have seen them with water build up inside them and act up intermittently

It sounds like you have manual trans becouse you said that you shifted. Are you saying that the motor cut on and off under a load, when you gave it gas after you shifted? A motor size and a the type of trans info will be needed to point you in the right direction

try changing your fuel filter first... start with the cheapest problems first. fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, wires, and cap/rotor combo. go that route. work your way to the fuel pump and ignition system.
