Take a plane, Hanoi Airport has a non-stop daily fly to Hong Kong and you can go with Vietnam Airline or several forgein airline which are competing for the market in VN such as Tiger Airways. www.tigerairways.com/

try the train...
chinese trains are pretty good (and mostly on time)
i always like to meet local people and talk to them, trains are very good for that (and cheaper then flying)
