"Keep your turtle out of your mouth and always wash your hands."
There is E Coli in people-poo, just like there is salmonella in turtle and lizard poo. That is why turtles under 4" became illegal to sell except for educational purposes, because too many small children got them as pets and would put them in their mouths and get sick.

I had iguanas and no one in my house ever got sick from them. The source I listed here explains the salmonella scare quite well. Keep the cage cleaned on a regular basis, wash your hands after holding them, and you should be fine. Even if you do get sick, odds are you won't die from it.

Any time you want to get a pet you should do research on that animal to find out all you need to know about how to take care of it right so he'll be a happy pet. Make sure you have all the right items. Reptiles need things like special lights and heat rocks because it helps them digest their food properly. Learn a lot and get everything you need before you buy the pet, and then when you bring your pet home you will be ready to take care of him properly and you'll both be happier.
