I am making pens and acquired a rough Olivewood burl that has been dried. it is about 3 inches wide, a foot long and a foot tall. Where is the most decorative grain to turn the best pens with?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but, I too make pens occasionally when I get a nice piece of wood with a lot of grain. The burl that I get is usually much to large to cut up for pens so I make bowls or cups. I've never had any olivewood so I really can't say too much about it.
