1. Fairbanks, Alaska
2. Winters are cold and dark, but very beautiful - if you like snow, which I do! Also, the northern lights....beyond words. Just amazing!
Summers easily get into the 80s.
3. Freedom! There isn't a large population here, so we're pretty independent people. We don't have the laws you see in the lower 48, regulating just about everything under the sun. If you want to live off the land, you can still do that here. Lots of states can't say that.
4. The dark winters. I don't mind the cold - you can always bundle up - but the dark really sucks. Of course, the opposite end of that is our summers are always light - and that rocks.
5. I'm not a good one to ask - I don't have kids, but wouldn't send them to public schools if I did. Not because the schools here are particularly bad, but because I wouldn't want my kids exposed to some of the little monsters they'd meet at school! I *think* that Alaskan schools are pretty good, though.
6. City proper, probably about 50,000. If you include the outlying areas, about 80,000. Still has a very small-town feel.

Our major sources of income in Fairbanks are tourism, the university, and the military. It's not the prettiest community by any standards, but the people are fabulous.

Oh, and no income tax and no sales tax. Groceries are expensive, but wages tend to be pretty high.

Good luck!

I live in the Phoenix area (suburbs if you can call them that) in Arizona. Arizona is a great state because it is much warmer than other parts of the country all year round. It gets a little hot in the summer (over 110 F) but its a dry heat so it's not that bad as long as you don't stay outside for long periods of time. But during the winter it only gets down to the 50s most of the time. No shoveling snow! And then if you want snow, we have some awesome skiing and snowboarding resorts less than 4 hours away. We also have a river that you can ride down in a tube, and drink a lot, and then at the bottom the bus will pick you up and bring you back to your car. Almost every day is a clear, blue-sky day with no clouds at all. There's lots to do in the Phoenix area, but if you go anywhere else in Arizona its not quite as good.

The biggest problem with Arizona is that most of the people here are old and drive slow, and hell if it should rain once a year, nobody in Arizona knows how to drive in the rain so everyone goes like 10 MPH and it sucks. I don't know about the school systems, I don't think they're that good. As far as diversity, there are a lot of Hispanics here, and not as many people from other cultures as I've seen in other parts of the country. And there are more big white trucks than anything else on the road.

Live in southeastern Pennsylvania, in the Philadelphia suburbs.

We definitely get all 4 seasons, and winters can be cold and snowy or milder and no snow (this winter we've been lucky and it will be almost 70 degrees on Saturday). Summers can be humid and you generally get a few days over 100 degress. Fall is absolutely great, mild temps and the leaves change.

I like that I can be parked in downtown Philly in 45 minutes. It's a great city, very good restuarants and museums, and it's manageable (about 1.5 million in the city limits). I also have good beaches with warm water within an hour's drive. I like that I can be in NYC in 90 minutes. I can also be in Washington DC in 3 hours. I am close enough to Delaware and Md beaches to make a weekend trip there.

I don't like when we have "long" cold winters. I don't like the Philadelphia mayor or council in general, or the laws that put gun offenders back on the street.

Philadelphia publcie schools are not great, but the parochial schools are good. In the suburbs, you have some excellent school districts that people are clamoring to get into.

Center city Philly is becoming younger and is attracting a good, diverse group of people.

n. virginia, it's not part of the south, trust me. humid in the summer =( mild with some snow in the winter. Fairfax county has a fantastic school system, it's like in the top 3 funds/student school systems. ALOT of new houses, although that slowed down a bit since the market value falling.. the people are very nice though =) and ALOT to do! you're 20 minutes drive from the capitol, and pretty much every business in the book is within half an hours drive.

I live in Minneapolis and there are 4 distinct seasons ,winters can be very cold ,but the other seasons are wonderful.I like the excellent park system and all the lakes in and around the city, there are excellent resturaunts and nightclubs, and real good local music scene. The schools are highly regarded and there are many colleges and universities. There is a highly educated workforce here as there are many large corperations here so the cost of living/housing is pretty high ,as are the taxes. It is overall a fantastic city ,my only rea complaint is the horrendous traffic. there are approx3.5 million people within the 7 county metro area.

I live in S. FLorida

Specifically West Palm Beach...its a growing town, not much to do but very close to the beach which I love because i'm right at the point where the ocean water turns that pretty tropical blue. Its beautiful. It also warm year round...I wore shorts on Christmas and New Year's eve and i'm only an hour away from the Nightlife in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. I can get to the Bahamas in 30 mins and Jamaica in a little over an hour (by plane)

School district is good, my daughter goes to an "A" school, we grade them here and my daughter's teacher really cares about her. population isnt bad ..BUT traffic during rush hour is awful! one of the main things i dont like are elderly drivers. They really do injure and kill more than teens and college aged people.

I just moved to San Diego from Los Angeles. to tell you the truth, San Diego is a great city because you have beautiful weather all year long. You have close access to the numbers of beaches around. There is no smog and the people are alot friendlier than Los Angeles. San Diego is less congested than Los Angeles. The thing I love about San Diego is that there are trolleys to take you around incase your car is broken or if you cant afford to buy a car. The trolley rides are only $2.00 but if you buy a pass, then it comes out to much cheaper.
