Well there are four main reasons:
Militarism
Rigid Alliances
Imperialism
Extreme Nationalism

At the time England had the most amazing and powerful navy in the world which prompted Germany to start building up armaments and their navy. Now, since countries in Europe are so close, everyone else started building up armaments as well. With all these weapons people and leaders started adopting the militarism mind-set of settling problems on the battlefield.
Countries in Europe also had a lot of deep-rooted hate toward each other, especially France and Germany, and Austria-Hungary and Serbia. The treat and tension combined made countries start joining military alliances along the lines of "if you go to war, I will too." Germany and Austria-Hungary had an alliance with Germany and Italy. France, Britain, and Russia had the "entente cordiale," or friendly alliance, that wasn't a military pact but a informal agreement to defend each other. All of these countries were also world powers and were competeing for lands overseas. And finally, all of these countries were extremely proud and thought they were better than any other country out there. There was so much tension in Europe that all it would take would be one small incident to start a war.

So, on June 28, 1914 a Bosnian Serb named Gavrillo Princip assassinated Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand. Princip was a part of the Nationalist group "The Black Hand" who fought for independence from Austrian-Hungarian rule. Austria-Hungary knew Germany and Italy would back them up so they gave Serbia an ultimatum on July 23. They purposely made it too harsh so Serbia would go to war. They asked that all nationalist movements disband and that Austria would handle the investigation of the death. Serbia refused and on July 28 Austria-Hungary declared war. Russia mobilized their troops because they hate Germany and wanted to defend Serbia. Germany declared war on France on August 3 and then attacks Belgium. Britain entered the war to defend Belgium on August 4.

The war began as a chain of events that revolved around several alliances made between countries. These pre-war alliances called for the defense of various countries under attack, and all of the major players in the war had made these alliances. These alliances combined with tensions between militarily active countries set the world up for a major war. The chain of events that led up to the war began on June 28nd 1914, when a Serbian student named Gavrilo Princep, who was part of the militant group called the "Black Hand", assassinated Austrian archduke Frances Ferdinand and his wife. The assassination was a result of the nationalism caused by the molding of the Yugoslavian provinces into a single state. The Serbian government was implicated as being involved in the plot and naturally the Austrians grew angry with them. Austria declared that they would go to war against Yugoslavia, but they were hesitant to do so because Yugoslavia held a defensive treaty with Russia. Germany had made a defensive treaty with Austria, so they promised that if Austria went ahead and made a move against Yugoslavia, Germany would defend them from Russia. Germany then told Austria to begin the war, and if it evolved into a larger conflict, Germany would support them.
Germany had a variety of reasons for being willing to be involved in this war. One of these reasons was that the assassination was an example of the Hapsburg’s loss of control and if Austria were to decline to Germany's offer, Germany would be completely surrounded by enemies.1 The German government also knew that Russia would lose a major base in Europe if they were to lose Yugoslavia. An annexation of Yugoslavia would also leave Greece and Bulgaria open to attack. Germany believed that Russia would back down like they had in 1908, when Austria had annexed parts of Serbia. The only difference from the earlier conflict was that in 1908 Russia was also suffering from a revolution, but by 1914 Russia had not only stopped the revolution, but they also had recovered enough to fight against Germany or Austria. Aside from that though, Germany had recently made an alliance with Turkey, and that made them confident that they could defeat any European country. Another benefit that Germany had was that England would not enter the war if Russia were the aggressor. Little did Germany know that the general consensus around Europe was that even if Serbia had been involved in the assassination it was not grounds to conquer it.

it was a time in history when Imperialism was dying, though Imperialists were not ready to admit it. With the assassination in Sarajevo, the entangling alliances created in the previous years by fat old men who knew that THEY would never have to fight made the 'choosing sides' inevitable, and battle the unavoidable result.

the extent and duration of the War took most of those fat old men by surprises however. killing technology came into its own during this time, with all sorts of new weapons (that exist even today) being developed and used, with incredible carnage as the effect. Aircraft, submarines, poison gas, tanks, RPG's...those monsters of the modern battlefield were born during this time.

i recommend that you read "A Politically Incorrect American History" to see how Wilson's duplicity drew the US into the conflict, despite his claims that he wanted to keep the US out.

The immediate Causes of World War II are generally held to be the German invasion of Poland, and the Japanese attacks on China, the United States, and the British and Dutch colonies. In each of these cases, the attacks were the result of a decision made by authoritarian ruling elites in Germany and Japan. World War II started after these aggressive actions were met with an official declaration of war, armed resistance or both.

The Nazi Party came to power in Germany by democratic means, although after acquiring power they eliminated most vestiges of Germany's democratic system. The reasons for their popularity included their renouncement of the Treaty of Versailles (particularly Article 231, known as the "Guilt Clause"), which had placed many restrictions on Germany since the end of the World War I; staunch anti-communism; the Dolchstosslegende; and promises of stability and economic reconstruction. They also appealed to a sense of Germanic identity, superiority and entitlement, which would play an important role in starting the war, as they demanded the integration of lands they considered to be rightfully belonging to Germany. Hitler was portrayed by himself, his party, and his book Mein Kampf as an almost otherworldly savior for the German people.

France, Great Britain, and the U.S. had attained their wartime objectives. They had reduced Germany to a military cipher and had reorganized Europe and the world as they saw fit. The French and the British frequently disagreed on policy in the postwar period, however, and were unsure of their ability to defend the peace settlement. The U.S., disillusioned by the Europeans’ failure to repay their war debts, retreated into isolationism.

-----
another leading factor was that a lot of the countries in Europe were still vulnerable from the great depression and they wanted a quick and easy way out and in Germany Hitler was their way out.

WWI was a terrible accident. It started because of a minor assassination, followed by about a dozen treaties' requirements for a military response.
