Some do, some don't.
Some shelters must put animals down after a certain amount of time because they do not have enough room or money to keep all the animals they get.
Other places have "no-kill" policies, and they place their animals in foster homes until they are adopted, or refuse to take in any more until they have room.
Euthenasia is done humanely, but this is why spaying and neutering is the most important thing you can do with your pet.

Yes. Your shelter/pound is there to serve the community and get unwanted animals off the street. There are too many animals that are unwanted and thrown away. Do not think that if you leave it there someone will come get it and give it a good home. In south Texas, if you leave your animal there, they will put it down immediately. If they pick up an animal from the streets, they only have to keep it three days and then it is killed. If there are emergenies-like a hurricane-all animals are put down. Some of these places try to be more humane and hold animals for adoption but there are so many they do not last long. If they are hurt or have heart worms or any other disease, they are put down immediately.
Please, people, stop having puppies. Spay or neuter your pet. And for the people that just dump out animals and assume they will be taken in or can fend for themselves. They just sit there and wait for you no matter how bad you have been to them. They starve to death or get hit by a car or both. If you are caught here, now, you will be fined and go to jail and I'll be looking for you.
There were something like 35,000 animals put down here in the last few years and this is a small area. Stop having puppies.
If you want a dog, stop paying large amount to puppy mill puppies and adopt one of these poor animals that is about to die. Every conceivable type of dog goes through this system so you can adopt just what you want.

Yes. At the shelter where I volunteer, the animals are garunteed 4 days. After that they are able to be euthanized which is done by an injection. Some, however, are there a month or more. There is simply not enough space for all of the animals that come in. They do, however, kill the feral animals and the older, less adoptable ones first. It's sad, but it's what must be done because there aren't enough homes.
People need to spay/neuter their pets to prevent unwanted animals from coming into this world.

It depends on the shelter. Some shelters are "no kill" and keep animals until they find a home for them, no matter how long it takes.
Unfortunately, most shelters and pounds are NOT no kill, and will euthanize the animals after a certain amount of time.
We (my husband and I) were told by one local organization that an older (as in no longer a small puppy even though it was under a year old) dog was only given 15 days before being put to sleep.

Most shelter do yes, some are so over crowded that animals that don't appear adoptable at first are put down inside 3 days. Usually ones who don't advertise themselves as non-kill organizations. Usually non-kill organizations do a lot of foster, as these animals can be there a LONG time. You should volunteer as a foster family.
Its not just dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, birds and other exotics as well.
The important thing here is to NOT be mad at the organizations who do this, but at idiots who don't fix their animals, abandon them or are otherwise irresponsible. All rescues do what they can with the money and space and people they have available. The demand is FAR greater then the ability to take care of them. I just had two cats that were not adoptable living with me for 2 1/2 years... they got adopted by a woman to permanently takes in animals that really NO ONE else wants.
Sadly many animals are turned away from non-kill organizations because the resources to care for them just isn't there.

Yes. Some can keep them longer, other cannot. I work at a "No-Kill" shelter, and let me tell you, we do euthanize. Sickness, behaviour problems, some other problems. ANY shelter that claims to not euthanize due to the numbers is just turfing them to another shelter that will euthanize!!! Many No-Kills are VERY picky about what they take in, so they don't have to euthanize.
And sometimes "foster home" is a BIIIIGGG euphemism for "we put it to sleep and didn't want to tell anyone!"
Really, if you think there are shelters out there that take in everything that is dumped on them an then they keep it until they find it a home.....I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you!!!!

I'm not sure about where you live, but where i live they do. Although the Humane Society goes to the animal shelter and gets the dogs they deem as adoptable from the shelter before the kill date comes up.

This depends on the animal shelter. County run animal shelters have to maintain some sort of control otherwise they would be overwhelmed. The county does not like euthanizing animals. They want their animals to find homes! They have started some time back advertising to find homes.

Yes, some of them actually do, they give the animals lethal ejection after a few months to a year of being there, however some shelters will specify that they do not kill the animals unless it is absolutely necessary

some do
the ones that do put down animals to make room for more or because the animal is unfit for companionship (like they bite or attack other dogs). This isn't easy for some shelters. In fact some expiration dates are expanded.
No kill shelters obviously don't kill...but sometimes have dogs with problems.
