weird...i just took a whole college archeology n another anthropology classes on this n sum otha stuff around the world.
the stone hedge gets several different causes from different archaeologists around the world.
mostly all agree that it resembles a calendar due to the precision of the stones. they also often agree that the ancient ppl used these to read the skies. anthropologists often agree that it was a sacred place to the ancient ppl. yet, after this is where mst ppl go their seperate ways.
some believe that it was built by the ancients with their own technology. 'the ppl made the bricks. the ppl lift them up. the ppl moved them.'
some believe that it was done by magic. 'the ppl used local witches n wizards to lift the stones.'
some believe that it extraterrestials or 'aliens' created the stonehedge due to its high level of electromagnetic activity. they believe this may have been a landing/launching site. n due to the sacredness, other duplicates were made across the land hopin the aliens will land there as well.
for the religous explanations, many of these temples were also created across the land...its called diffusion

I think it was akin to many of the strange gigantic structures built all around the world. They may have been utilized to direct space ships where to land, or to tell exact times to correlate certain mystical religious ceremonies that existed in those long ago days.
This is strictly creative imaginings on my part.

I'm stunned by some of the answers. Archeologists and anthropologists found out what it was decades ago.
It's a calender - it actually predicts solar eclipses to a respectable degree of precision, that is when there is a solar eclipse it shines between the same 2 stones.

In order to fully understand the answer that your question deserves you must read "Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid" by Bonnie Gaunt.
But the short answer is that it was built to point the people of earth to the worship of the true God of the Bible by Adam - the first man.

i think it was built as a customary act of the people who built it. perhaps it was in order to worship something or someone. it was probably just a symbol of power or strength or whatever.

Wow, this has puzzled scientists for a long time. Even today they are still unable to explain how with the tools available to them they were able to build it. So I say....The Aliens helped them build it. or.....magic.....
