After a sh*t Christmas this time we want to go somewhere with lots of snow. We don't want to ski - just a log cabin, open fire and some nice restaurants etc. Package holidays are a couple o' grand for FIVE nights!!!!

Hmm...I've been to Helsinki once in December and once at midsummer. I also visited Torku and the islands in the summertime.
I've heard people talk about Rovaniemi if you really want the country rustic although authentic Santa claus experience. I've also hear its expensive and lots of foreign (Japanese) tourists. However Keep in Mind Finland is really long (its like 10 or more hours to the Artic Circle area and it gets more than -20 C in the north sometimes...thats why I prefer the south..if you want to be close to civilization, nightclubs, bars, and good restaraunts...I saw the christmas market in Helsinki was really nice. People were really friendly and its very exciting in a big city if you want to meet people, plus at your hotel you probably have a sauna.

If you've got a couple of grand to spend you can probably stay anywhere you want so maybe renting a car and a cabin somewhere close to a city is a good solution for you. But I recommend more the southern coast for ease on travel connections and reachign your destination.

Well, Rovaniemi (it's above the arctic circle) didn't get snow until very late. That's what I can assume since we here in North-east Sweden didn't get that much snow until like the day before christmas - and that's BAD! Anyway, I read in the newspaper sometime in the middle of December that Rovaniemi, hadn't got any snow. So, if I were you I would try something far north. And NOT Helsinki since it's in the south of Finland + it's a big city and we all know that capitol cities are POLLUTED!

Here's one the biggest cottage rental sites for Finland:

The best selection for cottages is probably in Lapland (province Lappi) or in the Lake Saimaa district (province Etelä-Savo).

Southern Finland (Uusimaa, or Varsinaissuomi) might have some nice places by the sea.

Restaurants and other services in the Christmas season are probably best available in Lapland, or near towns in southern Finland (Turku or Helsinki in particular).

The highest probability to have lots of snow is in the north, this season has been very little snow in the southern parts of Finland so far.

I hope this answers your question at least partly...
