my mechanic says that my intake manifold has a crack in it and he says that is what is starting my car to lag when starting... specs chevy 350 new carb new starter new aleternator, new optima yellow top

Sure, it can crack. If it is a cast iron manifold they can crack. You can quick check it by spraying WD-40 along the surface of the manifold or where it meets the heads and block to see if it is leaking. Just do not spray it into the air cleaner. A leak or crack will make it rev up a little.

if you are talking about lag as being a long crank time before starting then a cracked intake gasket could cause that
if it is cranking slowly or erradicly then it wont be a cracked gasket
350 chev manifolds dont usually crack but the gaskets do go sometimes

you can always get a second opinion by taking it to another mechanic, or take it to the dealer of that type of car and have them hook it up to their diagnostic testing equipment (it may cost you a little bit of money - around $50 or so) and they can tell using the diagnostic testing exactly what is wrong with your car.

Yes this is definetly true....it distorts the gas / air mixture for proper combustion
