$400,000 a year plus benefits. However, an ex-President no longer has protection from the Secret Service for life, this was eliminated by Clinton in his 2nd term.

Edited to respond to Tyrone:

I didn't mean that past Presidents would no longer have Secret Service protection only Presidents in office after Clinton. It makes sense that if Clinton eliminated this that it would only apply to those in office after him! Geesh

It went to $400,000 the year Bush took office, double of what it was for Clinton.

And LadySable....Clinto did NOT take away SS protection from past presidents. Any past Presidents and VP's along with their families have SS protection for 10 yrs after they leave office if I recall....That's full 24/7 protection mind you. After 10 yrs it drops off to partial protection such as when they travel or do public appearences.

I think it's something like 250 to 300 grand annually. To be honest, Presidents always made more before they become president. The advantage is, they get that for the rest of their lives.

the first presidential act in 2001 was a salary increase from 400,000 to 950,000. since he took office 950,000 is worth about 400.000 and dont forget about the 57 trillion dollar deficit. I am sure a few tril fell off the truck.
