Franklin Roosevelt did an excellent job both domestically and abroad, both in times of peace and times of war. I think he is the only president to have been successful and proactive in such varied conditions. I would chose him as the best president in the time period you specified, and maybe one of the best of all time.

Johnson was an excellent domestic president, but did a horrible job internationally with the war.

Nixon was a disaster domestically, but did a pretty good job internationally.

Ford wasn't really in long enough to do much.

Carter is maybe the best man we've ever had as president, but he was an ineffective president. By far he is the best former US President of all time.

Reagan was a joke. His thinking was simplistic and lacked maturity. He is recognized by some for ending the cold war. My take on this is that he happened to be there at the right time. The Soviet Union collapsed from within. As the generation of Soviets who were involved in the revolution and the generation they trained died, committment to the Communist regime faltered. The war in Afghanistan provided a great drain on the Soviet Union and help make the regime fall. This was exacerbated because of the increased international communication. When citizens of the USSR saw the material wealth of the capitalistic wealth they wanted that more than they wanted a communist state. They were tired of paying for the war and receiving nothing in return.

It's really to soon to evaluate the three most current presidents, but I'm inclined to think Bush the Elder was probably about a B or B- president. The same with Clinton. He would have been rated higher if he hadn't shot himself in the foot by lying about his affairs. I am afraid that Bush the lesser will be recognized by history as one of the worst presidents of all time. Besides the war in Iraq he has put considerable pressure on the constitution and should be made to account for that.

Ronald Reagan, he worked to bring Spending down, lowered taxes and defeated the Soviet Union. We need someone with his policies back in office.

Reagan, followed closely by JFK. Both stand-up men who faced down communism like gunslingers. I lean toward Reagan because he was a man who valued the free market, and the nation prospered because of it.
And my dark horse is Calvin Coolidge, because of his hands-off approach to gov't.

Let's just go with Clinton and Bush. I think that Clinton was the better president. Why? Becuase he didn't take us into a war we shouldn't be in. He didn't kill thousands of our military men and women. He hasn't done it in the name of false weapon searches, when in reality he was doing it for Daddy. That's why.
