It's the abbriviation of commercial and is a generic top level domain name. It was officially intended to be for commercial websties but once the .com registry was open to the public it became of use to anyone, commercial or not.

.com is short for commercial, but while it was intended for business it became so well known, at least in the US, that it pretty much became the "default". A lot of web sites use it because some people who are looking for their web address try .com first.

edu = educational
gov = government

Yes, it's for companies, American ones. The uk uses .co.uk as an equivalent.

Just like .net is for networks.
.biz is for business.
