If you have access to a potter's wheel and a kiln, make one from clay.

Since I don't have access to both of those, I'd use Sculpey which is kind of like clay, but you can bake it in a regular oven. Then you can paint it and glaze it with something non-flamable...just read the labels.

If you want to be extra creative, you can always try using found objects as ashtrays, and just decorate the hell out of them.

A Friend of mine is a wood carver, and he makes ash trays out of all sorts of wood. I know what you're thinking, but he coats them in a silicone that naturally resists heat. Furnace guys I know put silicone caulking in seams of coal burning equipment because of its heat resistant properties! Check your local yellow pages to see if there is a pottery class around, or a pottery shop that you both could go on a different date.

You are right. After spending hundreds on expensive perfumes, they'll go and spoil it with smoking. So much for that. But the bad mouthing people thing, guys do it also la.

Clam shells make good ash trays, so do; old soda cans, tuna cans. Clean them well, glue cute stuff to them and voila, you have an ashtray.

Go to a machine shop that works on engines. Ask if they have an old piston that is not broken. They make great ashtrays and look unique.

When I was small I made my mum an ashtray out of clay. Not sure if she ever used it though so it may all go wrong :(

Try making one out of natural rock. Look for one that has a natural bowl-like shape. You can paint the outside of it.
