Your father's computer and yours share the same internet connection? If so, the only way you could have a wireless network is if both your computers have either a wireless card or integrated wireless network interfaces and you have a wireless router. If that is not the case that I am confused as to how either of you have any internet connectivity. It sounds like you have a wireless network since you are describing limited or intermittent connectivity. This is common in wireless networks that are unsecured, meaning there is nothing that is preventing other users outside of your home network from connecting to your router with their wireless cards. You must secure your network by logging into the router interface via http by using the IP address. You can obtain your router's IP by going to your start menu, select "run" they type "cmd" in the empty space and hit enter. A dos window will open, type "ipconfig" and hit enter, your IP configuration will be returned the Gateway IP is your router's IP address put that number in your browser address bar and log into your router with the user name and password. If that hasn't been changed the default is usually something like username: administrator, password: admin or vice versa. Once logged in you should go to the security settings and lock out users outside of your IP address range, and enable WEP encryption. You can find instructions for all of this in your router/firewall manual or by googling something like: "how to set up secure wireless network, linksys"

I don't know if DSL has a built-in wireless internet or not. Depending on what equipment you have, it may. However, generally speaking, in order to have wireless, you need a wireless router of some sort. Your modem (like a telephone for your computer) most likely does not have wireless capabilities built-in. I would say that if you still have the LinkSys to hook it up again and see what happens.

Good luck.
