I'm a fan of Anne Rice's vampire series. Wonderful books to read. If you want some ideas for writing your own, I suggest starting by reading through some of her works.

As far as my personal tastes regarding vampire fiction, I've done a bit of writing myself and have developed my own views regarding this genre and what makes it successful. Unfortunately, these are my ideas and I'm greedy when it comes to sharing my work.

I will give you this bit of insight though: To really capture the feel for the genre, you need to avoid the gore and sex, and focus upon what the vampire actually represents; loneliness, intense passion, unwelcomed change, and corrupting power.

Are you writing one yourself? If so, the best are not only filled with obvious sexual innuendo because that runs thin after a while. It should be filled with intrigue, mystery, sophisticated horror, the sexual intertwinement of death, blood and virginity, a doomed love and the blurring of the line between immortality and humankind. And of course some good old fashioned gore. Check out films like Interview With The Vampire.
