FDA approval is no real indication of a drugs efficacy. The FDA is suppose to make sure drugs are safe. It is has obviously failed at that task time and time again.
Today pharmaceutical companies pump out new drugs like auto companies make new cars. They are able to do so because the FDA doesn't require them to prove their new drug is more effective than their old one meant to treat the same condition.
There may have been a time when the FDA truly served it's purpose. Now it serves the flawed premise that if it doesn't pass through a lab it's not safe.

Items like herbal remedies and sports supplements are not classified as food or drugs, so they don't need FDA approval. There are vast numbers of products in this world that work without FDA approval. If the FDA hasn't approved something, that doesn't imply that the product is fake/useless/non-effective. Of course, there are fakes out there, but they are easy to pick out.

homeopathic or herbal are not FDA approved , are not allowed to say that they are able to diagnose ,prevent or cure a disease. but that doesn't mean they don't work .
It really depends on the individuals body. Everyone is different , so just as with FDA approved drugs they different things may work for different people's physiology.
