At 10:50 p.m. on 8 December 1980, Mark David Chapman deliberately shot and fatally wounded John Lennon in front of Lennon's residence, the Dakota, when Lennon and Ono returned from recording Ono's single "Walking on Thin Ice" for their next album.

I would say it is because we don't take mental illness seriously in this country. Mental health clinics and services for the mentally ill are a joke because there isn't any money generated by that part of society. There's plenty of money in real estate, law, plastic surgery, and product development (applied sciences) because money can be made from those areas but preventing tradgedies like Lennon being shot or the countless other horrors from the non-treatment of mental illnesses.

Because a crazy man thought that he himself was John Lennon and that the actual John Lennon was trying to steal his identity.

the man who shot him had a very bad mental illness. he, in fact, did not even hate lennon at all. he still has not come up with a reasonable explination.

Because Mark David Chapman is a nutcase. Hopefully he never ever gets paroled! It happened my senior of High School and I was very upset.

My ELA teacher said that there was a crazed fan who didn't like the way the Beatles were going...something about the world and the "movement", so he shot him..I don't really believe it myself but it could be true.

Unfortunately, for no reason other than a fellow with some mental health problems thought it was the thing to do at the time.

Nothing's really quite clear about it, since the murderer (Champ) was found to be mentally handicapped i.e. mentally ill. But some debate about that he sang many songs about cretisising God and Jesus, perhaps his assassin was some devoute nutter..
