Because those are the most acessible. Jazz is hard to get into as a teen because it's not in your face. You turn on the radio or tv and you can flick throuh 30channels before you find something remotely jazzy and even then, its rather hard to appreciate if you are not a big music enthusiast, because it is subtle.
But...fortunately the internet is changing that and allowing teens to gain more access to other types of music. As sites like Lastfm.com become more prevalent I think more people will become more open to new sounds.
The more gainsbourg and yardbird the better and I'm 20btw.

"not cool?" I'm not sure what you mean by that.
I think that a lot of hip hop just has that rather "streetwise" delinquint appeal for teens, and as far as I recall, jazz has never been a genre strongly patronized by teens, anyway.
When I was a teen, I also listened to a lot of rock, although I already had formal music training and much exposure to jazz.
As my music tastes grew and matured, I listened to a bit less rock and significantly more advanced blues and jazz.
As a musician, you start out learning simple chords and solos, then you sort of progress to the power chord thing and then, you either "level off" at that stage, or progress again to more complex forms of chording, harmony and rhythm.
For perspective, I listen to a wide range of music; from Stevie Ray Vaughan, David Sanborn, Steely Dan to Nickelback.

modern jazz sucks. Big Band is awesome however. Modern jazz is all moody and goes off into random solos by saxophonists which have no musical structure at all. Big Band jazz has an organized, jumpy, structured sound. If there was a Big Band revival, I think more people would listen to it. The Idlewild cd by Outkast has some pretty good jazz tracks.

All these answers are opinionated crap, except Woozy Wozzerson's. His answer is absolutely true, I'm sad to say.
Jazz doesn't have much a a chance to come back to the young mainstream, because today's popular music is infantile. There is more creativity in one good jazz song than there is in every song on every album of today's top 40. Ask any real musician, and they will agree. If the kid's heard good music, they wouldn't even know it.

Jazz isn't so bad actually.
Maybe it's just that there aren't so many jazz stations these days, and so the R&B and Rock stations are listened to more often. Plus, they figure it's just instrumental so they wouldn't have any lyrics to listen to.

Most teens don't like it because it's not "cool".....jazz is older music, and most teenagers like new kinds of music like rap, even though i'm not a fan of it! Happy New Year!

because it's too complicated. Kids like something they can play in the background while they're studying, or in the car while they're talking to their friends. But as the brain synapses finish forming they'll get it.
