He's a child and studying is boring for an older teenager or adult let alone for someone his age. You have to make it more fun and interesting. Get involved in his work by reading it over with him, doing day trips or the like that might relate to his work. For example, history homework could be aided with a trip to the museum. Some subjects like science can be made fun by using the internet (you can even buy a science book for kids and do a few experiments with him).

This is a British site but it has a few interesting games and guides that might make studying and doing homework more interesting (http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/websites/4_11/). Also, don't make him spend hours on end with homework. This will only bore him and make it a chore that he wants to avoid. Give him Friday night and Saturday off and make him do work for half-an-hour before giving him a break doing something he enjoys then making him come back to it.

Make it fun. Use flashcard and review games, such as matching, jeopardy, etc.

Take everything away from him. Don't let him eat, until he can recite his study word for word.
