It's all to do with your muscle to fat ratio. You will find it harder to stay afloat if you carry more lean muscle and have a low fat index. That why a lot of African nations have few olympic standard swimmers due to more muscle lower body fat.

Your friend may have a higher lean muscle mass % than you. From what I understand muscle isn't buoyant, so those with high % of muscle will not float. A bunch of the guys on my swim team can swim like fishes, yet they can't float.

My husband sinks, too. Isn't that strange. I heard once that it has something to do with body fat ratio as far as how bouyant someone is in water, but I don't really know. I float like a cork. It figures.

I've tried all my life to learn to swim with no success, I just sink to the bottom no matter how hard I thrash about. All but one of my children are good swimmers, one is like myself, a sinker.
