Im currently 16 weeks pregnant, and i was told i had to wait until i was 20 weeks to get an ultrasound done, i want to do it before the beginning of feb, as my hubby works on the road alot and never knows when he will be around, but he wants to be there to find out what we are having, why wont they do an ultrasound before 20 weeks? im paying for it, can i request one? Or call the place that does the ultrasounds myself and get one done? I have insurance for it, or what can i do, if my dr says not before 20 weeks? Thanks so much for any advice :)
And now that i heard the heartbeat, does the risks drop? The heartbeat was about 160 today...Thanks!!

Any time between 16-20 weeks is normal practice. Just explain to them your reasoning. Even just a week in advance might be good enough for them.
I had mine done at 19 weeks. My friend has hers at 15.
You can go get one of those super 4d ones and set up the time for it on your own. You pay out of pocket, since theyre a medical novalty and not a real ultrasound for the doctors office. Most big hospitals have one.

I had my ultrasound done at 18 weeks and found out that I'm having a boy. I heard that you can find out as early as 16 weeks. As someone else mentioned, you can also get a 3D or 4D ultrasound done, but it will be an out of pocket expence since it's not medically necessary to have one. However, my sonographer strongly suggested that you can get the best quality 3D ultrasound between 30 and 32 weeks, which means you'd have to wait awhile longer. I'm sure that if you talk to you doctor and let him know your situation, he could work something out with you. Just make sure that if you decide to go elsewhere, check if the person performing the ultrasound is a qualified technician. Some places that do ultrasounds just want to make money and they don't hire certified techs.
Good luck and congrats!

I beleive you can see genitalia at 16 weeks...You just have to push them, but they might have their own reasoning for waiting, there are probably certain things they are waiting to develop to check on..........You cant request your own ultrasound, it has to be done with a doctors script..if your babys healthy and has a strong beat (which 160 is) thats a girls heartbeat BTW!! If you are 16 weeks now you will be 20 before the beginning of FEB so just tell them you want one when your hubbys home....

The risk of miscarriage is down. But as for the ultrasound, it is difficult to tell the sex if you get it too early and hard to look for defects which is the reason to get it in the first place. If he isn't there take a tape. Most dr.s will video tape it for you and he can watch it when he gets home. If you want to find out the sex together, then have the tech put it on a piece of paper in 2 envelopes and open it together. The ultrasound is for checking for abnormalities, not finding out gender. That's just a bonus. You may be able to talk them into earlier. Mine is in 2 weeks and I'll be 19 weeks then. You just have to ask but I doubt it.

Yes the risk of miscarriage drops when you hear the heartbeat and you are also past the 12-14 week mark. As far as the U/S many drs cannot do an U/S and get accurate results until close to the 20 week mark. Explain your concern to your dr and he may be willing to work something out.

I will be 16 weeks pregnant on Friday and I am scheduled for my first ultrasound tomorrow. Our health insurance covers the ultrasound. It probably depends on the clinic, but since you are paying for it out-of-pocket maybe they just really want to make it count and be able to tell you everything you want to know. I know the 3D ultrasound place where I live, will do ultrasounds at 18 weeks, sometimes earlier. Maybe check with them. Good luck and congrats!

Just wait!
I had a very stressful pregnancy, I thought I was losing my son at 15 weeks, and they did an ultrasound then. It was soooooooo expensive, but my insurance covered it.
At 20 weeks, you'll be at the half way point, the measurements they take will be accurate.
Good luck, too. I bet I know what you're having just by the heartrate.

yes earlier than 20 weeks is to early to tell because it is much harder to tell now when are 20 weeks or further is much to tell cause the baby will be a little bit bigger and then you can fine out if its a boy or a girl good luck and hope the best for you and your baby.

Explain to your dr that you would like to have an ultrasound when your husband can be present. My husband travels also and the dr's office and the radiologist office were very accommodating.

Request to have it done ASAP and let them know the situation your husband has. With you paying for it they should be able to accompany your request.
