It would of course depend on the employer and size of the business, but the overwhelming majority of employers check references very carefully.
If there is any involvement with vulnerable clients, either children or adults...a criminal record check will be varried out as well.
I think your friend is having a bit of a joke with you.

No - they certainly do check your references and if you intend to work in some jobs they check your prison record as well.

A lot depends on your interview. They may like you enough to not check but you can't count on it.
And remember, if it ever comes out that you lied on your resume, that is a dismissible offense. You will lose your job and have no come back. It is fraud.

I would not think so. even if they don't check you still have to do the work and if it's not up to par you wouldn't want to use that company for your first UK reference.

I've hired and fired dozens as a manager and believe me, we develop a nose for smelling out the frauds. Be honest, Cheat and if you get caught and you are in the job it could mean a jail sentence and certainly you will never get another job like it afterwards.

A friend showed me a reference from an American guy. No way was it real. We laughed our asses off then he binned it. Keep it honest.

no, it is not true... besides, even if you are admitted and at a later stage they find out it is not true what you put in the application for the position, you can be laid off.
