I recently bought a quite expensive foundation (no7) and it looked find in the shop on the back of my hand but when I got it home you can see it and it is slightly tinted orange, it's the lightest one I can get in no7 range, am I being picky and is it really OK.. Or is it too dark and if so, how can I tone it down because I don't want to throw it away!

I'm assuming since you say it's an expensive foundation, you got it at a makeup counter in a department store, or at a specialty store like Sephora or MAC. If this is the case, you should be able to return it.

When trying out foundation, the back of your hand is not the best place for testing. If you really want a good match, you have to try it on your face, preferably along your jaw line to make sure it's a good match not only to your face but your neck so you won't have that line that so many women get when they apply too-dark foundation to their faces and leave their necks bare.

Also, take a small, handheld mirror to the store with you. Ask the salesperson to give you a small amount of the foundation on a sponge. Then go to the nearest window or door, or go completely outside and test the color in the daylight. All stores are lit with fluorescent lights, which don't show true colors at all. That's probably why your foundation looked good in the store but bad at home. This is the only way you're going to get a truly good match to your skin tone.

Good luck!

Well, when you test foundation in the store apply it to the inner part of your wrist that is lighter to see if the color matches. Your face is not the same color of the back of your hand. If you don't want to test it on your face in the store then at least test it on your neck or under your chin area to get a better idea on the correct color for you.

Well, if you purchased a liquid foundation then all you have to do is add some moisturizer to it in order to lighten it. It will then it out and lighten it for you. If you still want the same opaque consistency and not have it thinned out then MAC carres a product that can help you. You can use MAC's Multi:Purpose Mixing Medium. Formula to dilute and mix with M·A·C powder or liquid makeup. Used to create effects from sheer to opaque. Perfect to decorate the face or body. Mix with pigments and powders to create a number of custom shades and colours. It offers sheer, even coverage and long-wearing attributes. Create custom body lotions or use to thin down heavier foundations such as M•A•C Full Coverage Foundation. Use alone to give the skin a satin glow.

Return it with the reciept and explain to the clerk your predicament... They should be understanding...Just get your money back and you can go get another...I recommend TruBlend by Cover Girl. It goes on smoothly and it looks great, even through an hour-long work out and oily skin.......You should be able to just have to tell the clerk that you tested it in the store, but when you got home, it looked different. At the very least, you should be able to get store credit to use in the future.

Hard to say if it is too dark, but for me I always go for a lighter shade if there is a question. Lighter shades will give your skin a lift. You can always use a bronzing powder on top.

blend it in completely and if it still looks tinted than next time you buy it make sure it matches your face not your hand b/c your hand might be a little lighter or darker than your face.

Just make sure that you blend it in COMPLETELY & don't be careless while you're putting it on.
But just in case you decide you really dislike it, I would go buy a cheap brand of makeup in your appropriate color.

If it is orangey then it is too dark. Try Bare Minerals.
