It's approaching 50/50 in the USA these days.

ETA:
Mommyof4 - Maybe YOU need to "read the link." Here is a link to the ENTIRE TEXT of the AAP circumcision policy -
http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics%3b103/3/686
The EXACT WORDING is:
"Existing scientific evidence demonstrates potential medical benefits of newborn male circumcision; HOWEVER, these data are NOT SUFFICIENT to recommend routine neonatal circumcision."

I don't think anyone knows the exact numbers especially for a decade, but I do remember reading somewhere for numbers for the last 2 or so years and they are steadily decreasing. More parents are being informed of the process and what's actually happening to there newborns.

You can actually find websites that show you the equipment, the process with audio, etc. It's actually very disturbing and gross. I don't know how parents could have put there babies through it, but then I think back and hope they just weren't informed about everything and didn't know. But then again circumcision has also been about the looks, and norm. for people. And "supposed" health reasons which have never been scientifically proven. >.<

As people learn more about the harm circumcision does - and the Internet has helped educated people - very few well-informed parents are having their newborns mutilated. Worldwide the rate is less than 15% and falling. Mostly it is done only as a religious rite. Christians do not need to be circumcised, as the Bible clearly states that it is not necessary.

The study among African males found that if condoms are rejected, circumcision of men in areas of epidemic AIDS can cut the rate of heterosexual transmission of HIV/AIDS from truly appalling to extremely bad. In countries where hetrosexual transmission of AIDS is minimal (dirty needles are the usual way it is spread in the US), and there is no cultural bias against condom use, it makes no sense to chop off the pleasure center that is a foreskin.

More are circumcised.

Between 1988 and 2000 the rate of circumcision of newborns before hospital discharge post-birth has increased 6.8% per year in the United States. An analysis involving 4,657,402 male newborns showed that circumcision rate rose from 48.3% to 61.1%. This increase was considered to be in response to the better recognition of the medical benefits of circumcision.
(This info is the result of a survey done by Nelson, Dunn, Wan and Wei, entitled "The increasing incidence of newborn circumcision: data from the nationwide inpatient sample" and published in the American Journal of Urology in 2005).

The general statistics for circumcision in the United States are as follows:

About 65% of all newborns in the United States get circumcised *at birth before leaving hospital* (official statistics).

Another 20% approximately gets circumcised at some later point, some because religious reasons (Jews and Muslims do not usually circumcise at birth), medical reasons (phimosis, infections, etc) or cultural or family reasons.

So, it is true than not less than 85% of American males are circumcised (The 50/50 claimed by some is definitely wrong).

In Canada statistics confirm that 35% of all newborns are circumcised at birth before leaving hospital. About 15% are circumcised later, so about 50% of Canadian males are circumcised.

The recent studies carried out by the US National Institutes of Health proving that circumcision efectively reduces the risk of AIDS-HIV infection by up to 70% is very likely to increase rates in a near future, both at home and abroad.

In Africa, Asia or Latin America, countries with little or no circumcision tradition are starting to promote the procedure to help to reduce the AIDS infection rates.

So yeah, it can be definitely concluded that circumcision rates are indeed increasing.

More people are getting circumcised. Unlike the radical women on here that use lies and insults to prove their false points, here is a link to facts. The majority of males in the US are circumcised. It does prevent UTI's. For all of you who love to quote the AAP read the link. And the AAP is neither for or against circumcisions.
