if you were served with a summons by a process server then this usually means that you have been named a defendant in a civil lawsuit (in other words, you got sued).

The best thing to do is to show-up. If you don't show-up a judgment might be issued against you.

Further, once you show-up you can always ask the judge for an opportunity to retain legal counsel which is usually a wise move.

There are several kinds of summonses. If you received a summons and complaint, you are being sued and should hire an attorney or let your insurance company know if it is something you have insurance for. If you received a jury summons, call the clerk and find out if you will have to appear for jury duty. If you received a summons from a police officer for a traffic offense, fill out the form, plead guilty and have your check book ready.

Summons are easy...they are usually for minor offenses and you state your case...You have to tell the truth
