I was thinking about joining the Free Masons, but I have no idea what they are, who they are, what they believe in, and if they even exist anymore. Could you give me the answers to some of my questions?

Just Me... You are moronic yourself. You say I should simply look the Masons up on Wikipedia instead of asking about them on this sitee. That defeats the whole purpose of Yahoo!Answers. Besides,I"ve never even seen The DaVinci Code or read the book. I've simply heard that many characters in history like Ben Franklin and many Civil War soldiers were Masons. I just wanted to be like them. Thanks a lot lady, you just really disappointed me and showed me that I simply cannot trust some inhabitants of the world to answer a simple question.

P.S. They believe in God and Jesus and everything don't they? I"m a United Methodist, and I think they might not let me in because I believe in God.

They do wxist, and for sure you have to be a man to be accepted, not to have any police record, be a moral person with strong ideas, and ready to help those around you. Masons are convinced christians, you should believe in God.
You have to find a grand lodge that will accept you, and they can be found in most big cities.
"The requirements for membership are; that you be a man, one of good character and reputation; that you be a peaceful citizen, and one who guards against intemperance and excess; and that you are one who respects genuine brotherhood and general good of society. Freemasonry requires a belief in a Supreme Being. " from http://www.grandlodgeofvirginia.org/fyinfo.htm#membership

After you have read some of the suggested links on the history of the Masons, you must be Nominated [so to speak]/sponsored for membership by a current Mason.
Basically the Masons practice a moral code of living and believe in community; giving back and honor...and yes, they are Christians.

Freemasonry is an oath bound fraternal order of men who derives from the medieval fraternity of operative Freemasons. We adhere to many of the Ancient Charges, laws, customs and legends of operative Freemasonry. We are loyal to the civilian government under which we exist. We inculcate moral and social virtues by symbolic application of the stonemasons' working tools. and by allegories, lectures, and charges. Freemasonry obligates its members to observe the principles of brotherly love, equality, mutual aid, secrecy and confidence. We have secret modes of recognition that permit members to recognize each other as brothers. We require a through examination into the mental, moral and physical qualifications of a petitioner and we admit men into the fraternity by secret ceremonies based in part on old legends of the Craft.
We are not a secret society but rather a society with secrets. Suggest if you are interested in more information you contact a man whom you know to be a Mason or go to a local Masonic Lodge. If a local Lodge is not close by then contact the Grand Lodge of Masons in which you reside.
once a petitioner has decided to apply for membership he fills out a petition signed by 2 members of the Lodge he plans to join. he gives the application to one of the members along with the required initiation fee and the application is read at the Lodge's next stated meeting. the Worshipful Master will appoint an investigating committee to interview the petitioner and report back to Lodge at the next stated meeting. after which the petitioner is voted on. once the petitioner is accepted he is given the three degrees of Entered Apprentice then Fellow Craft and the third degree of Master Mason. there are certain requirements which must be performed by the candidate before being allowed to take the next degree. one is not allowed to wear any Masonic jewelry until he is raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason.
you must have a belief in a Supreme Being and the Masonic Order has a SPECIFIC NAME that we refer to GOD as. if you have seen any of my posts I use the Masonic Name quite frequently in referring to GOD which is THE SUPREME ARCHITECT OF THE UNIVERSE

They do still exist.
How you join I cannot say. I'm not sure if you have to be a carpenter and jeweler or what not but you MUST be a man.
Try the net for a local chapter and go see them. They probably won't let you into a meeting but may give you some clues.

Yes they exist. The governer of Alabama was recently lambasted because he claimed he didn't notice that blacks were excluded from his Mason lodge.
I can see how that would happen....
