I am writting a general Cover letter but I have no information about the company except an e-mail address. So who would I address it to. " Dear...." or " To whom it may concern" are a few. Anyone have any other ideas?

I always put "Dear Hiring Manager,". No negative comments yet.

When you don't know to whom to address your cover letter, it's customary to address it in a variety of ways:

1) Dear Sir or Madam:
2) Dear Hiring Manager:
3) To Whom It May Concern:

Which one of these to use is strictly a personal choice, but all are appropriate.

Now if you're really smart and want to "go that extra mile," you could call the company and ask to whom you should send your letter. This makes you look really good because you took the extra step to find out, which shows your ability to research. And this separates YOU out from the others!

A neat little trick I tell my students.

My first question would be, why are you contacting a company that you don't even know the name of? I am assuming that you are applying for a job. I work in human resources and if you are applying to this "mystery" company address the letter to the Human resources. You can place in the reason line Human Resources. ex:

Your Name
Your info

RE: Human Resources

To whom it may concern;
Mr/Ms .....
You get the idea

I would contact the company and ask for the name of the person in Human Resources. This way you will be one up on the other applicants.

If they do not give a name, then you can put it to the attention of human resources... follwed with to whom it may concern.
