Most people that use it, only use it for a short time and get off it as soon as they are able to. Others take advantage of it and think it is their right to sit at home not working while the rest of us support them.
When I had my son at a young age I used it for a little under a year. I got a job as soon as I could and have been supporting my self and my son since. I hated being on it, but knew that I had to for my son.
I hope that answers your question.

That would all depend on the reasons why they had to apply for welfare to begin with. It was designed to ASSIST people in their times of "need", when all other sources of income & financial aid have been exhausted (things like workers compensation for injured workers & unemployment insurance payments for laid off or fired workers). It was never designed to be a way of life to raise a family in! I can only say that from my own personal experience, it was a true blessing that kept myself & my child fed so that we did not have to continue to steal food from the shelves of the supermarket. It took some getting used to, but being poor can become a vicious & never ending cycle when the people who have jobs as civil servants & social workers don't do their jobs in a way that helps the very people who are the reason WHY their jobs are there to begin with! Perhaps they see the poor as a built-in sense of "job security"! Many people just use welfare in conjunction with their other illegal activities, making it harder on the people who truly just want a HAND UP & not a HAND OUT!

Okay, needing welfare, because I can't get by, but I "make to much" to qualify anymore. I would love to be a mom off of welfare. Well, I guess I am now. How is it that I am barely getting by but all the Hispanics who live in my complex are driving around brand new Camaros and sh*t, not working!!??!!??
Aggravating!!!

Yeah we meet at the masonic hall daily for lunch & a strip tease show throwing fist-full of $100.00 bills at the dancers! Then on our way home we stop at the liquor store for more booze & visit the local street drug dealer for weed crack and the daily special! Welfare that's what congress has royally as they annually raise their own pay! Pass out earmark & seed money to large corporations for the trickle down effect that has no Trickle!

Having been there before, I'd say there are 3 types.
Those who are ther cuz they need it.
those who don't want better.
and those who don't know better.
If you need it.. you learn that you had better and want more.
Most of those that don't want better usually are the ones looking for a free ride.
some of the rest merely haven't had the chance to know anything but.

I think Eric gave a very good answer. I don't think they live well, but I don't think most of them want to get off of it either. I think there should be a timeline, and we should require them to work--pick up trash, mop floors, etc.
