Platys are not schooling fish. Is your fish showing signs of being unwell? It may be another problem (water quality etc.).

If you do want your fish to have a friend though, read these guidelines.

Do you have a male or a female.

If you have a female, just put in another female, no problem. Easy stuff.

If you have a male you must not add another male, and must add at least 2 females (more would be better depending on tank size)

Or you could always add another breed. PLaty's are community fish and would get along well with guppies, tetras, barbs, danios etc.

Your platy is lonely because he is a schooling fish and you have him in isolation. He doesn't need one friend, he needs 4 o 5. Keep it some where around 3 females to 1 male, those males are hornier then a drunk teenager on prom night.

Sadly, they don't "school" (move around as a group) in an aquarium however, unlike a Rummy Nose Tetra.

Platy fish don't get lonely; they will interact with each other but they aren't schoolers and do not need to be with other fish.
But why don't you get a few more platies? What size tank is it? If it's 10 gallons, you could have 2 male and 5 female platies.
Always get at least 2 females for each male.
If your tank is 5-8 gallons, you could get one other platy. If your tank is smaller than that, it is too small for platies, so consider upgrading to a bigger tank (and getting more fish :))

You could get another platy fish if your tank is big enough. You could get him a toy. I read on the betta forum that hard ping pong balls are nice cause they like to push them around but i'm not sure if it's the same as for platys.
