Its not a waste of time, but is it necessary? If you don't need to get a degree to follow your vocation why do it unless you want to? If you don't need to go, your time could be better spent getting experience and on the job training. You would also have the added benefit of not getting into hock with your student loans etc, and you would be earning!

Good luck!

Yes, university these days is a complete waste of time unless the job you want to do absolutely requires a degree (eg medicine, law).

If you want to open a restaurant you are better off spending the next four years getting to know the trade on a practical level (maybe start by being a bar manager or something). You will be able to EARN MONEY at the same time!

You will then have a fair bit of practical experience under your belt, whereas if you go to university you will come out aged 22 with a lot of good ideas, but bugger all experience of the industry you want to be in and a huge overdraft.

If you have enough business acumen to open your own restaurant, you'll have enough to see that the modern university experience is an expensive con!

And if the restaurant doesn't work out, you'll still have a big headstart over others your age: 4 years experience in the trade! Experience counts for much much much much more than qualifications.

University is never a waste of time as you meet new kinds of people and expand your horizons. Why not do both? If the restaurant is successful you have a nice little earner to finance your studies. Instead of a gap year spend a year setting it up. But be aware that in the UK three out of five new small businesses fail. In the States, evidently, the figure is two out of five. Good luck.

Well, in the university your spelling would get a lot better. No what I mean?

But, actually, the richest guys I know, never went to college. I only went to college because I did not do well in high school and I had something to prove to myself. If you don't have anything to prove then don't go. There are a lot of jobs out there that won't consider you if you have not gone. So, you should consider that also.

University is a good thing, but its best to go into an area that you'll know will be of use to you.
A degree in business will certainly put you on the right path, even if you don't become successfully entrepreneureal straightaway.
Plus, Uni is a very good experience in itself. Different people, and the first year is just a stream of fun. Enjoy it while you can, then once you graduated, you'll have a lot under your belt, including a business degree.

I don't think uni is ever a waste of time but in some areas you can work your way up to the same position without a university education. Only you know if you're really capable of taking on a business at this stage. Check out the uni prospectuses and arrange to talk to some of the relevant tutors to find out what you'd really get out of a course before making a decision.

It's definitely not a waste of time. It will also give you some breathing space to work out what you really want to do. I strongly suggest you research the restaurant trade thoroughly to learn the pitfalls. The majority of new restaurant start-ups fail within 12 months. Even the Gordon Ramsays of this world learned the hard way.

I would say you dont have to go to university but it could be very helpful. Business school will help give the skills to run your resturant. Theres a lot more in running a buisness than most people realize and this could give you an advantage. Also remember that most resturants fail (whether youre great at it or not) so it could be wise to have a back up career option.

Definitely not.
At the very least, go to a state school and major in business. Who knows if your restaurant won't be a hit? By majoring in business, it'll help your restaurant management that much more and give you a secure back up! And if you're really set on that restaurant, be a part time student and start the restaurant with someone with a larger business know-how. Just be sure to graduate!

I went to University & it was one of the best experiences of my life. You get to move away from home. You get to discover yourself as a person. You get your own independance. You get to be your own person & discover yourself. You get to meet new people & make new friends. I left university 7 years ago & still keep in touch & see about 10 special friends. With regards to your own business & skills, it gives you more skills that you would be just getting a job after leaving college. I would def go to university.
