You need to go out and buy Tapers. They look like long thorns and you can buy them at tattoo shops or off of eBay.

After you have the tapers, clean them off and wash your hands, this is like getting a whole new piercing and your ear will be prone to bacteria. Then slide the taper, small part first, through your piercing. Then place the stoppers on the back and front. After a few days you can remove the taper and insert the plug.

Warnings:

The few days that you go through the stretching process you should avoid touching your piercing... you don't want bacteria getting in there!

Trying to insert the plug on the same day you inserted the taper can result in bleeding and uber loads of pain.

Do not skip gauge sizes! No one wants more pain then necessary!

It is a good idea to wait about a month or so before going up to the next gauge..

Be patient with your ears!! Gauging should not be a painful or bloody process!

You should go to a professional piercer and have them do it. They can make sure not to tear the skin too much and let you know if the hole is too close to the edge of the lobe anyway. They'll use a taper and go a few sizes bigger. You can punch your ear too, but this causes a lot of damage and unnecessary pain.

Guage is a size of something, ranging from very small (24) to very big (00). To guage a piercing (which I think is what you are asking about) you use a stretcher/guager which is a piece of either straight or curved jewelry that goes from a small guage to a large guage. Little by little, you push the jewelry through your piercing until it is to the guage you want. You can see your local piercer or get one from a body jewelry outfit.
