The measurement of the fineness or percentage of gold in a metal is a karat--abbreviated K. Pure gold--100 percent gold--is 24 karats. All alloys (the combination of gold and other metals) are calculated based on the 24 karats. So, if you are buying an 18K ring, you are purchasing 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals. If you purchase a 10k ring, you are purchasing 10 parts gold, 14 parts other metals.

Gold less than 10-karat (41.67% gold) cannot be legally called nor marked "gold" in the United States.

Gold is yellow--and that is the only color pure (24 karat) gold is. It's what is added to gold that effects it color--not the gold itself.

White gold can be produced up to 21 karat. There must be at least 3 parts (karats) of the 24 karats of pure gold that is other metals. By adding certain other metals to gold the yellow of the pure gold can be bleached to a white appearance.

In reality, instead of "coloring" yellow gold to become white, the alloying process is actually "bleaching" the yellow gold by adding (alloying) it with gray metals. Nickel and palladium are the strongest bleachers of yellow gold, silver and zinc bleach moderately and all other gray metals are moderate to weak bleachers.

Most white gold used in jewelry is either a white gold produced with nickel (nickel-whites) or a white gold produced with palldium (palladium-whites). Most white golds used in North America are produced with nickel.

the karot systems used as an equivalent to the weight system (equal to wiegth of gold in a certain cubic square)however im not to good with conversions so you may want to double check as you already may know 24kts is the maximume weigth of gold sold. now you may not have known this pure gold is very soft so it must be compuonded with other metals to make it harder. and since white gold is a compund of nickel (altough this may have changed) and gold it gives it a silver color instead of yellow so this is why you can see the pattern of most white golds never really bieng 24 kts not saying its not possible but i would be careful of a con ( 10kts is around 41% gold composittion)

White gold is mostly gold and platinum mixed with a very small amount of other things.

i dont kno very mmuch about that stuff but common sense is that its less than 24kt gold. white gold is like GOLD....except its not yellow gold. but then you cant call it silver because its of more value than silver.
