I understand that you have to get down and have a real good look at the item under consideration and then gulp a couple of times at the enormity of your task. Take the item in both hands and intoduce slowly so as not to scare the owner of the item.
It may be that the item cannot be introduced all at once and a bobbing up and down action is required. One may also wish to consider some lubrication to ease things - half a pint of lager is the minimum requirement.

I was recently reading that sword swallowers have to practise with smaller items.

Try with smaller things not sharp,round,and well slippery.
when you can swallow good,try with sharp and longer knives and swords .
