The best answer to this question lies in misdirection. His administration succeeded in making average Americans believe that America is involved in a war in Iraq. Of course, there is no such war... Bush even memorialized the war's swift ending by landing a plane on an aircraft carrier. Since then, America has been involved in an occupation of a nation at war with itself. Such an occupation could go on indefinitely, and has no goals outside of continued military presence. Because there is no enemy to defeat, there is no way for victory to end the conflict.
But by using the word War over and over, and getting the media and average Americans to accept the word War, it is given more political influence than it deserves. Most Americans still believe the United States is at war, though none seem to know exactly who we are at war with. One would think that would cause a lot of self-reflection, but instead, it resulted in the reelection of the worst US President in a hundred years.

I'll admit to voting for him the first time around, but by 2000 I was appalled at his incompetency, the lies surrounding the war, and his general dictatorial attitude. He resurrected the controversy over gay marriage, and thereby sucked in the Evangelicals again, by touting the discriminatory amendment he wanted added to the Constitution. He knew full well that amendment had no more chance of passing than the first time around. But use it, and them, he did, and he was handed the Presidency once again. Back in 2000, he was still highly approved by those who believed in this war, and the fact that we were failing in Iraq managed to miss quite a few people. By the time the majority started to realize exactly how much of a mess he had created, it was too late. Therefore, the mid-term results.

In the first election, I didn't feel strongly in favor of Bush or Gore. I thought they were about the same, even though I voted for Gore.
By the second election, it was pretty clear that the Bush administration had no plans; just a lot of wishful thinking and slogans. I was strongly against George Bush by then, and voted for Kerry.
Things have only got worse since then, and it is clear that George W. Bush is criminally inept, a liar, and probably mentally ill.

Obviously you are either very young and haven't experienced really bad presidents or you're very old and can't remember them. I think President Bush made a huge mistake in not killing the illegal alien invasion and supporting the Free Trade Acts. They were both leftover's from some really bad leaders. At least when he lies he sticks with them, not like his predecessor and his competition. Face it, politics breeds liars but it is the best system that we have. Maybe you could try contributing.

Actually 'Americans' did not elect Bush, those that voted for him were ONLY they United Statesians. That said, he wasn't elected twice, he was elected ONCE in 2004, in 2000 he was chosen by the Supreme Court not elected to office.

His scare tactics were good but since November it's appearant they don't work anymore because Democrats have the majority in just about everything. By the way, he wasn't elected twice, actually Al Gore won the election the first time but the supreme court saw otherwise. He was actually only elected once.

Actually, he was elected twice because most of the people who quietly work for a living and earn their own way, and don't have time for protests and polls, believe the same things that he believes.
It's referrred to as the "silent majority" and it has nothing to do with being scared of anythign. It's about doing the right thing, no matter how publicly unpopular.
Oh, and for the "Al Gore actually won" people, do some reading. EVERY RECOUNT showed a Bush win.
