Im an independent, single, 28 yr old male and work as an automotive engineer. Ive worked in engineering for 8 yrs, and my current job pays well and is secure. I have a mechanical engineering degree, and also a Master's qualification. Thing is, ive now become bored with engineering, im unmotivated/uninspired, dont see my future in it, and the situation is depressing me cus i really want a new challenge. i have felt this way for some time and feel trapped cus ideally i want to do something creative, a role which will allow me to express myself (everyone tells me im a talented artist) but im told i need to re-train by prospective employers. Im seriously considering going back to uni again to study say animation or graphic design, but this will hit me hard financially and will mean making big sacrifices (3yrs further study, giving up nice car, putting off buying a house). Anyone made such a career change, any regrets? Decisions, decisions.... :

I know someone who did degree in graphic design. When she started work she said she was at the same position as poeple without degrees who'd trained on the job for the same period of time. Try looking for posts like that, it'll probably be low pay but it will be pay and will give you valuable on the job training before branching out alone.

Yeah making decisions sucks. I gave up a paying job because i hated the hours. Now im not sure what i wanna do. I tried different things and so far im not happy. I think if you have kids and a wife. It is not be worth the risk. If you are single then you can go for what you like. Every one would be happy if they had a job doing what they like but most of us are not happy. Honestly i feel the same way im not sure what i want. Try finding some kind field of engineering that is more exiting. With your background maybe you can invent something in your free time. This way you could just spend you life living of the income and not work at all.

The motor trade is not dead, I would reccomend giving up being a technician/engineeer. What I would reccomend, is to train as a panel beater(body repair man).
Go to carshalton college, there are so many cars being wrote off for lazy reasons. You can make 5k a month if you work on 3 cars a month and sell them. Also, make sure you repair recent vehicles, T reg to 53, fiestas, corsa's, KA's, yaris. They sell themselves. You'll find it easy, as you know the engineering side of things. All jobs get boring after 3yrs, but you need to make or earn money my friend.

Why not go freelance and become your own boss? That way, you will still have your qualifications and be able to use your skills. You can also define your own working hours / conditions. I'm not sure how much call there is for mechanical engineers, but I'm sure this is do-able.

i think you should do it and if you don't you will regret is. do it before you are no longer single and have kids because then you will be stuck because there will be other people depending on you and you will have to support. is a nice car now worth being trapped where you are for the rest of your life???

YOU COULD TRY FOR A COMMISION IN THE ARMY OR NAVY, OR TRAINING AS AN ACCOUNTANT, THEN WORKING FOR A MULTINATIONAL ENGINEERING COMPANY. Also forensic science might interest you.
