Water molecules are Polar (answer d.) which caused a much stronger force of attraction between water molecules than the attractive force between methane molecules (which are non-polar).
Water molecules have a special type of polar, di-pole dipole, bond which is especially strong...called Hydrogen Bonding. It is this especially strong intermolecular force of attraction which caused water to be a liquid at room temperature and not a gas (like other similar molecules). Because of the higher intermolecular forces of attraction caused by its polar nature, water has a much higher boiling point than methane.
Anwer d.
Boiling point of water at 1 atm: 100 degrees C
Boiling point of methane at 1 atm: -162 degrees C
A difference of 262 degrees Celsius.

the massive distinction between H2O and CH4 is that a H2O molecule is able to bonding with different H2O molecules. this may well be a extensive effect that effect in water having this kind of intense boiling element and freezing element while positioned next to CH4. the two hyperlinks describe the effects of intermolecular forces and molecular weights on boiling factors of undemanding molecules like H2O and CH4.

D. Polar, final answer. It produces hydrogen bonding. These bonds must be broken for the water to boil and it takes lots of energy to do so. Methane is non-polar.
Incidentally, I agree with the first answerer. Start studying, jocko. What are going to do when you are out in the woods, away from your computer and want to boil an egg. Use methane because you didn't learn your lessons??
