Many people have great success teaching themselves. If you can, that's wonderful!

Most learners are different though. There are different types of learning. For example, I am a visual learner... if you wanted to teach me to tie my shoes, I could look at some drawings and it would help me.

Diagrams do not work for someone who is an Audio learner... these people need verbal instructions for something.

Many people only need someone to teach them something if they have trouble with the style of the do-it-yourself book or website or show.

People who are Social learners can only learn from another person.

This is a very cut and dry explanation... most real people fall somewhere in the middle of a few learning styles. But most of us, at some time or other, find it easier to learn from another person who is experienced in whatever it is we want to learn.

(If we didn't need to learn from other people, then this site wouldn't exist)

Maybe because it limits what you can learn. Unless you are really compulsive about it, most people if they are teaching themselves will avoid steps because "they" think it isn't important. They'll never need it, etc.

You don't have the advantages of the experience and education of the person who is teaching you either. I think there are few people who can really self teach themselves all they need to know in life or in a career. A lot of skills can be self taught though. Sometimes it's quicker to be taught and avoid lots of mistakes and also learn from the mistakes and accomplishment of others.

There are advantages and disadvantages either way.

That's the humanistic way you learn from your environment who and what you're around. You can't know what to teach yourself it has to be taught to you in some way by someone you may be able to improve upon what you were taught but it has to come from somewhere it's kinda like the question which came first the chicken or the egg?
