my router,modem and xbox is in different locations.i have wireless broadband so thought if i simply connected as i explained above,i could connect.if fails as it cant locate my ip address.also,i havent put an ethernet cable from the xbox to the router.please help.

The Xbox 360 can not use a proxy server. it has to connect directly to a isp. Hooking it to your laptop is attempting to use your laptop as a proxy server and will not work. You ned to hook it directly to a router, switch, or cable modem that is connected to the internet.

Nope- it would do neither system any good. You need to get an XBox wireless adaptor for about £25 from somewhere like Game. You can then wirelessly connect to the router and access XBox Live. Another alternative (which costs about the same), is to get a long ethernet cable (a 25m one is about £20 from Maplin) and use that.
