For a car this new...it is pretty odd...depending on how many miles youre racked up so far.
I would have the transmission fluid checked

Hi Rachel,
I am in the auto industry and I have many clients asking comparison questions. Unfortunately, the service tech at the dealership may give you bad information, so here is something that works all the time. Go to a dealership, see a salesman and test drive a used 2004 Mazda 3 (not a new one, since the transmission may be different). If it shifts the same, then it probably is inherent in the design. If it shifts smoother, walk to the service department and demand your car to be repaired. Hopefully it is still under warranty, so the cost will be covered by Mazda. Also, don't remove the battery. Your car is designed/programmed different from a 1995 Ford Contour.
Good luck.

I have a coworker with an '05 6S who described the same conditions except that the rough shift was from 2 to 3. After repeatedly taking it back to the dealer, Mazda finally agreed to replace the transmission - under warranty. My coworker described reading about another Mazda owner with the same automatic transmission trouble.
Therefore I would strongly advise you to pressure Mazda for an answer. Show them this answer.

I drive an 05 6i, and I noticed the same exact thing. In between 1st and 2nd it jerks very hard. I have read a lot of people saying the same thing. As long as you have gone and had it checked, you should be fine. I think it may be the way that the car was programmed, and shouldn't be damaging at all. I just hope they get this fixed in the newer models!

Its a problem with the powertrain control module. My grandfather's 95 ford contour does the same thing. The only thing that fixes it is disconnecting the battery and letting it sit for about 15 minues, then reconnecting the battery. Then its fine until the next 250 miles then it starts all over again.

Take it to the dealer and have them do a quicklearn on the transmission controller to reset the clutch volume indexes (CVI's) this should take care of the hard shift, It resets the way the transmission shifts.

The trans fluid should not be changed at 30k, it is supposed to be 100k fluid. check the fluid level(with the car warmed to operating temprature) check 8-24 in your owners manual for procedure to check the fluid, i have a feeling it will be a bit low. yes, i do work for mazda.

Take it to your Mazda dealer, have the Service Manager take the car for a test drive. He/she will tell you what is what with the trannny.
