They do. Which is why fighting is no longer allowed, it can lead to suspensions and I believe even fines. Even before the lock out, it wasn't technically allowed, but it was tolerated. Besides, hockey players are wearing lots of big pads, basketball players are unprotected.
And no, race isn't an issue. Not just white people play hockey and not just black people play basketball. The same people don't even run both organizations.

Because hockey is a physical sport. People always try to turn everything into a race issue, it is ridiculous!
Plain and simple, Hockey is a sport where contact is part of the game, a lot of contact, and sometimes all of the hitting mixed with high emotions can lead to a fight, and the people involved in the fight get punished by the league.
Basketball is a sport where contact is strictly prohibited, no contact is allowed. So although they may have some emotions running high, the constant contact is not there provoking a fight, if you throw a punch in basketball, you are escalating the issue to a whole new level all on your own.
Look at the history of the 2 sports and the way they are played, if you still think you can somehow make this a race issue, you are a nitwit.

Well, if ya ask me, its because hockey isnt all that much of an entertaining sport and the fights tend to be the only entertainment that the spectators have. Basketball and football are higher viewed sports and are a lot more entertaining than hockey.
Basically the only reason why MOST people watch hockey is for the fighting and the media knows this.

I dont think its race, I think Its probably just because Hockey is a contact sport and basketballs not supposed to be...even though i think a fight in basketball is just as useful, if you notice a fight in hockey is like a 5 minute major, maybe followed up by fines, but in the NBA fighting can lose you a whole season...so its probably just because the media is following the leagues example

Because the media wants to use every chance that it can get to bash African-American/Canadians
They cosider fights in hockey - a predominantly WHITE sport - un-influencial because a whole bunch of white people play it...and what Mr. Whitey does is good for everyone. But when fights in basketball occur - basketball is played by predominantly blacks- it is not right and therefore is bashed by the media. Just because the amount of people who play ball are black, anything that is done against the rules of the sport (created by James Naismith - a white guy) it is considered wrong and influencial and is wanted to be stopped. Also the punishments are also dished out by a bunch of white people .... no fairness there is it.
I am sorry but every one want to think that racism has dissapeared....but it has not.....is still operates in the fibres of our society.

Fighting has always been a part of hockey. Some of the problems the NBA has is with the closeness of the fans, there's no barriers or anything, so as you saw in the Pacers-Pistons fight, it can quickly engulf the crowd. It is a bit of a double standard, but hockey handles fights a little different then most other sports.

I don't think race is the issue here. Hockey would be considered a contact sport. They run into eachother and push eachother around during the whole course of the game. Not like in basketball where if you touch someone it's a foul. So, I think it's just a nature of the sport.

the media would react to fighting in hockey if and only if the NHL would enforce significant penalties for this form of aggressive behavior. note that hockey has suffered from significant injuries and possibly deaths from abusive use of sticks for assaulting opponents, the media did pick up on those incidents. north american hockey is overly aggressive compared to the rest of the world, this has contributed to the continual dominance of european teams in world events, where fighting is not condoned. hockey can be an incredible skill sport, the question for the NHL is are they willing to change their product??
