My dress pants were the same way...I asked my tailor and he said a lot of females would rather the pocket stayed closed and lie flat against your hip or leg. I prefer to keep them closed and have my tailor remove the pocket and free up the "bulge". Hope this helps.....

They are real pockets. A lot of clothing manufacturers lightly stitch the seams shut so that the garment has a nice clean look to it on the racks. this is usually with suit jackets and slacks. Chances are your pants are made with a flowing material. You are suppose to take either a razor blade or a stitch ripper to remove the thread.

I bought some pants from Banana Republic that had the pockets stitched shut. I cut the thread & carefully took it out. My pants have pockets now. I'm not sure why they were stitched shut. If you're careful & avoid cutting the actual pocket, you should have pockets.

some pants just have those pockets to look like they are there, but they arent real pockets so the material inside does not get all crumbled up and look bad. also, if you have a big ***, pockets usually tend to stay open, and women dont like that. so they just make them shut.
or the pants might just be badly sewn.

It could very well be fake pockets. ( not a very bright idea I think..) anyway it may be as well that they are pockets and they are stitched closed not to deter theft but to stop them from sagging and hanging open therefore destroying / streching the pants.

You can have the option of unstitching them as pockets. I have a few pair of slacks that function the same way. rear and side pockets.
