I have heard this is true. For example, a girl gets pregnant, doesn't know it, and her period is say 17 days late and it's actually a miscarriage. Maybe just heavier than normal. Would there obviously be something different and alarming about this "period", or would it be just like any other, esp. since it is so early in pregnancy? The reason why I ask is because I had unprotected sex twice after a couple of weeks or so of being overdue for my depo-provera shot, and my period came a month and a half later, it was about 2 weeks late, and I thought I possibly I was pregnant, though with no symptoms other than sore breasts. Hypothetically, could this be a miscarriage? Even though it's not incredibly painful or heavy? Would I be able to tell the difference between an early miscarriage (if I didn't know I was pregnant) and a normal period?

Yes, it's possible. No, not all miscarriages are these bloody, messy, painful things that you hear about. I had a miscarriage some 2-3 weeks into pregnancy, had no idea. Period wasn't significantly late, and mine have always been weird. Went to the doctor for something completely unrelated and found out I was having a miscarriage due to blood hormone levels. Yes, it was heavier than usual, yes, there was a little bit of tissue, yes, I cramped a little bit more than usual, but not some blood squirting, doubled over mess that women seem to think that happens during a miscarriage. There's really no way to know for sure without blood work, and that's IF your body has produced enough of the pregnancy hormone to be detected.

What you were experiencing was most likely just hormone fluctuations due to the late shot. My breasts normally get sore for a few days before my period from normal hormone fluctuations. Get bloodwork done if you want to know for sure.

My ob doctor told me that app. 50% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Most women just don't know it. I had a miscarriage when I was 5 weeks along, so technically only a week behind my period. My period was a tad heavy but no more than a bad period, and the cramps were just like a bad period. Sometimes it is said that you need to have a D&C to make sure the fetus is gone. However, I didn't go to the doctor at all and everything is fine. But you may want to go just in case.

It could be a miscarriage, many happen so early the woman doesn't even think it is pregnancy resulting in miscarriage. It could also be due to the uneven amount of hormones from the late depo shot.

it is absolutely possible. about 1/3 of all pregnancys end in miscarriage before the 1st trimester is over. many women never realize they are pregnant before they miscarry. the only reason there has been a rise in miscarriage reports in the past year is because of the increased accuracy of pregnancy tests and the frequent use of them by women who may suspect.
