You haven't provided enough information about yourself for real advice. Are you away from home a lot or just a little bit lazy and irresponsible? No pet "takes care of itself". All living creatures need nurturing, food, sanitation, doctoring, etc.
Cats make good pets because they are fairly independent, but they still require food/water at regular intervals, litter box changes, doctor's visits for shots once per year (and possible more if they become ill), not to mention love and play time (depending on the cat's disposition). Kittens require more care and supervision than adult cats. Adopting an older cat from a shelter might be an option. All cats & dogs need to be spayed/neutered to prevent messes and unacceptable behavior during "season" (even if it's the only animal enclosed in your house with no chance to reproduce). Cats should be kept indoors to prevent death and illness (outdoor cat life expectancies are usually a few years; indoor cats can live to be 15+).
Fish are nuturing to the soul if you like watching them swim in an aquarium, but they can be very time consuming and costly for upkeep (and messy when changing the water).
If this sounds like too much to handle, perhaps you would do better by starting with some plants? Animals as pets can be very rewarding emotionally, but like any relationship, they require reciprocation. Pets should be considered a longterm commitment and not a whimsy. Good luck.

Well, you shouldn't get a pet just for the sake of having one. Even the most independant pets need a certain amount of care and nurturing to be healthy and well adjusted.
Anything, if you can provide adequate love / care / cleaning / time, but are just not, say, home 24 hours a day, maybe 2 cats? You could get 2 kittens or 2 adult siblings, and they should be fine during the day by themselves, but they will still need lots of human love on evenings and weekends.
If you want a pet with a very LOW care requirement, how about a snake? If they don't gross you out. A corn snake would be tame and quiet, won't need anything bigger than a 40 gallon tank, and doesn't stink. Spot cleaning and water refill is all that is required on a daily basis - feeding is once a week if you don't mind rats in your freezer.
Or some leopard geckos? Less offensive than snakes, but they need to eat live crickets every day. But, they won't miss you when you're gone.
Lastly, how about fish? A nice fishtank is lovely to look it, sounds nice, and it means the fishlight is on when you come home (unless you come home really late). Again, your fish won't miss you, but you will need to invest an hour or so a week for water changes.

You sound like a cat person to me! Cats are great because they can be loving companions, yet they don't mind being left alone. Most cats love attention- purring on your lap, rubbing around your legs, and playing with you- especially if you get them when they're babies.
Even though they appreciate attention, cats can also take care of themselves. When you're not at home, a cat will just nap or play with its toys. They won't miss you terribly, but they still enjoy having you around.
Another good thing about cats is that they need a relatively miminal amount of care- especially when compared to dogs. If you feed them dry food, you can leave it out all the time and just make sure they have enough once a day. Same goes with water. Litter box scooping isn't too bad either- you can even buy automatic litter boxes that scoop the poop 10 minutes after the cat leaves. You only have to empty them once a week on trash night!
Good luck finding a pet and I hope this helps!

I have a miniature Schnauzer and he is now about three years old. When I first got him he was a little wild but within less than 6 months he calmed down and grew out of most of that puppy behavior. He is still energetic, sweet and has a great sense of humor. I am a student and I spend a lot of time away from home with school. I crate trained him, but he does fine in my home without a crate for a few hours. These dogs don't shed much at all which is great for people with pet allergies. He loves to sleep, and sleep, and sleep, but especially right next to me. These are great dogs

A rock.
Seriously, you don't just get a pet to have one. If you don't even know what you want, what's the point of getting a pet at all? It's a living creature, not a toy. And a pet won't nurture you, it's the one that needs the nurturing. And if you're not there, it can't even be nurtured by you.

A cat. They are quiet, but know what they want, and when they want it. they are independent, and sometimes want your attention, and sometimes they want you to leave them alone. I find that they are easy to leave alone when you go on a trip. Just leave a big bowl of food and water for it. you never want to leave one alone for over a week though. if you do, then get a friend to care for it, or leave it at a boarders. Hampsters and rodents really wouldn't work for you, cause they are just kind of sqeaky and don't really seem to connect to their owners. I had 2 of them, one was nice and one was mean, but neither of them liked to 'love' on me and in the long run the mean one literally ate the nice one.

No pet can take care of itself so I wouldn't recommend a pet at all.
