Whitley Bay is a seaside town on the coast, north of the Tyne Estuary. Formerly in the County of Northumberland, it now is part of the urban area of North Tyneside. It was famous as the resort to which thousands of Glaswegians would go in the 'Fairs Weeks', but those days are long gone. Whilst people still go for day trips to the seaside, Whitley Bay is now mainly a dormitory town for commuters who work in nearby Newcastle upon Tyne, or in the industrial areas of Cramlington and the ex-coal field towns of south-east Northumberland. It was famous for the Spanish City amusement park, now under redevelopment. The other landmark is St. Mary's Island Lighthouse which can only be reached at low tide.

To the south, it adjoins the old fishing village of Cullercoats.

To the northe is Seaton Delavel and Seaton Sluice, another old port laid out for the export of coal, and the 18th century Seaton Delavel Hall

There were coal mines, inland in the adjoining village of Hollywell
