By and large, it is just for show. The president is actually chosen by the electoral college. Each state is given a certain number of electors. The state legislatures decide how the electors are awarded. Most states award the electors based on the popular vote of that state. So the national popular vote is meaningless really. Just ask Al Gore or Richard Nixon (in 1960) who won the popular vote and lost the electoral college.

After the 2000 "election" I suppose it is a show....of who can buy their way into the seat. And I don't even mean as far as campaign spending-as far as that "election" was concerned, Al Gore spending I-don't-even-know-how-many-million didn't even matter because Republican Bushie Bush over here decides that he's gonna dirty deal with the supreme court and deal them some cash so that they will ILLEGALLY decide that he is president. Again, ILLEGALLY-when there is question over who is really president it is supposed to go to the HOUSE, not the goddamn white-rich-male-republican-for-the-most-part-goddamn Supreme Court! (sorry, I know that was offtopic but I saw another response that made me bring that up)

Anyways, to answer the question, It's the electoral vote that matters, not the people's vote. The people's vote does not mean sh**...seriously. The electoral votes are 100% of what decide the presidency.

The Electoral College has all the power, the popular vote does not account for anything.

The entire election process is just for show. As Lysander Spooner wrote, "“A man is no less a slave because he is allowed to choose a new master once in a term of years.”
