Marijuana was outlawed for two major reasons. One was racial prejudice against Mexicans. The other was the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana. You can find a discussion of the history of the laws, with links to original sources at http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/library/mj_outlawed.htm
The idea you have asked about was offered by Jack Herer in the Emperor Wears No Clothes. While Jack wrote a wonderful book, I have to disagree that it was a conspiracy of those industries. For one thing, it doesn't explain the marijuana laws prior to 1930. For another, there was no reason for any of them to think that hemp or marijuana was a particular threat. Hemp was such a minor crop at the time that even the hemp farmers didn't argue when it was outlawed. You can find a discussion of that idea, and why it isn't true, at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/library/hemp_conspiracy.htm

I'm very sure if the Government had a way of making money on it then they would legalize it the same way they have with tobacco
That's why it is illegal to grow a tobacco tree.....if people grew their own tobacco then the Government would be out of pocket too. A tobacco tree would take too long so the Government knows most people won't go to that trouble but a Marijuana plant is a lot faster as it is a weed.
Only problem is that Marijuana can be abused and can cause problems the same as Alcohol.
Marijuana seems to be the lesser of the two evils as it can be eaten without having a bad effect on your lungs.

Alcohol maybe. The others I hadn't thought about. Mostly, I think it is illegal because it is very difficult to tax something that anyone can grow (most states don't tax groceries). And the government (meaning the majority of voters) loves to levy taxes on the fun of others (possessions, alcohol, tobacco, etc).

Yes on all accounts. They also have not found a way to regulate the THC level like percentage of alcohol.

Personally I think it is illegal because it is so easy for the public to produce their own, so it would be impossible for the government to tax it.
I think the effects of it are less than drinking, especially because people who drink too much can get violent and hurt people, and peope who are "too" high tend to just fall asleep or eat.
HAHA.

THE UNITED STATES CAN'T LEGALIZE IT BECAUSE THEY CAN'T REGULATE IT. IT'S A PLANT THAT CAN BE GROWN PRACTICALLY ANYWHERE. IF THE UNITED STATES CAN'T MAKE MONEY OFF OF IT THEN THEY MAKE IT ILLEGAL SO THEY CAN MAKE WHATEVER LITTLE PAY FROM THE LAW BREAKERS. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS.
